About Bethany

Bethany Handfield painting with encausticBethany Handfield is an Okanagan artist and teacher who primary works with mixed media and encaustic. She views painting as a form of meditation and place to commune with spirit. She uses found objects and up-cycled materials in her work as a way to reclaim the discarded and give new life to the forgotten.

Through her Exploring Encaustic series of art classes, Bethany guides students on their journey using the medium of encaustic in a safe and knowledgeable setting.  She is a faculty member at the Okanagan School of the Arts and teaches with the Penticton & District Community Arts Council, Summerland Community Arts Council, and at various other locations in BC. Her mentor was the esteemed teacher of encaustic Thea Haubrich.

She is currently the vice president of CanwaxWest (the western Canadian chapter of the International Encaustic Artists) and owner/operator of Encaustic Supply Canada (national encaustic art supply business), Exploring Encaustic (retail sales), and Bethany Handfield Creative Arts (teaching/exhibiting). Handfield also heads the South Okanagan Women in Need Societies’ Healing Monday’s program that brings artists together with SOWINS’ clients.

Bethany is the winner of the Thea Haubrich Award of Excellence for Best in Show at the 2014 Waxing Poetic exhibition and was nominated for Arts Educator of the Year in 2014 & 2015 by the Penticton & District Community Arts Council. Bethany will be featured in the upcoming 2nd edition of Linda Robertson’s Embracing Encaustic book.
